Chapter Nine

After work, Hazel stopped in at the hospital. Moira was there, sitting in the corridor, looking as cheerful as ever.

“I brought you a coffee,” Hazel said.

“Oh, thank you, darling,” Moira said. The other one was for Fritha but it didn’t look like she was there. Oh well, Hazel thought, I’ll drink it myself.

She asked the question she had been dreading. “Has there been any change?”

Moira shook her head. “No, but they are talking about sending her home in a few days to recuperate with me and the help of a speech therapist.” As if that will do any bloody good. I have to look after the coffee shop.

“Oh dear,” Hazel said.

Moira stood up to go into the room. “Come on,” she said.

“Actually, do you mind if I go in by myself?”

“Of course not, love.” She looked closely at Hazel’s face. “You look terrible. You’ve got big bags under your eyes - are you alright?”

“People keep asking me that,” she said and laughed. “I think everything has got on top of me. How are you managing the café anyway?”

“I have my ways.” She tapped the side of her nose. “Fritha’s helping a bit, of course.”

I feel terrible about asking her when she has study to do, but I don’t have much choice.

Hazel slipped into the room and shut the door. It smelled of disinfectant and that ripe tang of food that was past its best. A tray of lunch, that looked barely picked over, sat on the table beside the bed.

“Hi, Auntie.” Hazel went straight up to her aunt and grabbed her cool hand. Briar’s face was turned toward the window, eyes open.

Her thoughts were much stronger this time. They hit Hazel like a jolt of electricity. This time the sky was a whirling vortex of threatening clouds. The wind whistled in the background and her aunt’s voice yelled: Passe. Pillow. Pansy. Passe...

Hazel moved her lips and concentrated everything on sending thoughts, squeezing Briar’s hand. I’m here, Auntie. I’m listening.

Her aunt immediately stopped screaming the thoughts. Hazel, is that you? Help. Please.

Hazel, I’m stuck. Each of her aunt’s thoughts hit her with the weight of a swinging punching bag. I’m stuck in here.

It’s going to be alright. What happened? Hazel desperately tried sending thoughts to her aunt, but she had no idea if she could hear them or not.

Hazel?

I’m here.

I… don’t know what happened. I was holding a pansy. It flew out of my grasp. I fell. Then I ended up in here and I can't get out. I don’t want to forget but I can feel it slipping away.

Her aunt's thoughts started rising in volume again as she began to panic. The wind noise picked up, buffeting Hazel so she could hardly think.

Please. Help.

You are safe. I’m here with you and Moira is here too. We will help you. A hot tear slipped down Hazel’s cheek and dropped onto the sheet. Her aunt obviously felt her presence, whether she could understand the thoughts or not. So that was something.

Hold on, she thought.
